Newbury Park teen still seeking marrow match
Mia Stoutenborough Residents can sign up for the national bone marrow registry from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., Feb. 11 at Newbury Park High School, 456 N. Reino Road.
The registry drive is for local teen Mia Stoutenborough, who was diagnosed in 2009 with severe aplastic anemia, a rare type of bone marrow failure. The disease prevents bone marrow from producing enough red and white blood cells and platelets.
Mia completed her second round of immune-suppressive therapy with a partial response. A bone marrow transplant is the only real cure.
At the drive, donors complete a consent form, are given a quick medical evaluation and then take a swab of the inside their mouth for a sample of their tissue type.
The information will be entered into the Be the Match Registry, and donors will be contacted only if they match a patient in need of a transplant.
