Busy streets aren’t helpful for walking to school
I had to laugh out loud reading the Aug. 26 editorial “Classrooms reopen next week.” The line that got me was “Here’s an idea: Tell the kids to walk to school.
“Most children live within reasonable walking distance of their schools, especially elementary campuses.”
Good luck with that.
Have you tried to walk three elementary-school-age kids across Olsen Road, Moorpark Road or Sunset Hills Boulevard at 8 in the morning with cars screaming by well above the 45- or 50-mph speed limit?
My kids attend Weathersfield Elementary School, and I would not, in a thousand years, let them walk the 1.3 miles to school alone.
We have to cross Sunset Hills Boulevard. Even a crossing guard, if we had one, would be taking their lives in their hands helping kids cross that street.
School closures ensured that mine are not the only kids crossing very busy streets.
It sure would be nice to see the city or the school district do something for the safety of all Thousand Oaks kids so that more of them could walk to school.
We invite you to join us on a walk to school. It might prompt another editorial. Judy Baumhover Thousand Oaks
