Sailor who went around the world arrested
Zac Sunderland
Zac Sunderland had the skill to be the youngest person to solo circumnavigate the globe and the good sense to run from pirates, but apparently failed to avoid a teen party with alcohol.
Sunderland, 18, and three juvenile teenage boys were arrested at a vacant home in the 2200 block of Calle Riscoso in Thousand Oaks at 1 a.m. Aug. 12.
“It was a mistake on my part. After cliff diving in Malibu I was invited to go over to the house for a kickback with a group of friends. I came inside, said hello, went to use the bathroom upstairs and then everyone started running around,” Sunderland said.
He said the house was dark and he didn’t know what was going on. He was unaware police were there, Sunderland said.
“Someone shined a flashlight in my eyes and said, ‘Stop.’ I didn’t know who it was and tried to jog out the door when I ran into a police officer. He tackled me. I stopped and got on the ground,” Sunderland said.
The young man who traveled the world alone on a sailboat was charged with resisting arrest, unauthorized entry of a dwelling and contributing to the delinquency of a minor—all misdemeanors.
“When Zachary was arrested, he and some juveniles were drinking alcohol outside in the backyard of a vacant residence on Calle Riscoso that they had earlier gained entry into,” said Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Capt. Ross Bonfiglio.
According to the police, when deputies approached, they told Sunderland to stop. Instead, he lowered his shoulder, charged at a deputy and had to be physically subdued as he was apparently trying to escape from the yard.
“No injuries were reported, but Sunderland’s arm contacted the deputy’s shoulder as he charged at him. That’s where the resisting charge stems from,” Bonfiglio said.
The three juveniles—two 17- year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy—were arrested for curfew violation and illegal entry, according to police.
Thousand Oaks has a curfew of 10 p.m. for those under 18.
“The contributing to the delinquency charge stems from the fact that evidence at the scene indicated Sunderland was the one who provided alcohol for the three cited juveniles and possibly other juveniles who had left prior to the deputies’ arrival,” Bonfiglio said.
“I didn’t buy any alcohol. I can’t,” Sunderland said. “I’m not old enough to buy alcohol and, even if I was old enough, I wouldn’t buy it for minors. I didn’t drink any alcohol. I passed a breathalyzer test with zero alcohol.”
Sunderland was booked into East County Jail at 2:38 a.m. and released at 9:56 a.m. He was released on a misdemeanor charge with no bail but with a promise to appear. His court date is set for Sept. 14 at Ventura County Superior Court in Simi Valley.
“It was my best friend’s house, and he said it was all right for me to be there,” Sunderland said.
At the time of a neighbor’s call that brought the police, Bonfiglio said, deputies had information indicating those arrested didn’t have permission to be at the house.
“If Mr. Sunderland wants to bring exculpatory information to the contrary into court, he certainly can do that,” Bonfiglio said.
“I have a clean record. I’ve never even had a parking ticket,” Sunderland said.
