Let the good times roll, take two.

District 13, which comprises the Conejo Valley, Moorpark and Simi Valley, earned its second straight trip to the Big League Baseball World Series in Easley, S.C.

After enjoying Seattle Mariners’ batting practice from the diamond at Safeco Field last week— en route to winning the Western Regional Tournament in Bremerton, Wash.—and a home run derby Tuesday in South Carolina, District 13 began its World Series jaunt Wednesday against the host squad.

“The whole experience has been great,” said left-handed pitcher Tyler Abbott, a Royal High graduate who will take his talents to UC Irvine this fall.

Players from Thousand Oaks, Royal, Moorpark and Oaks Christian high schools are featured on the District 13 roster.

The team is scheduled to play four games in pool play during the next few days.

The top two teams in each pool duke it out Tues., Aug. 3 in the semifinals. The title game will pit the U.S. champion against the top international team before a nationally televised audience on ESPN at 5 p.m. West Coast time Wed., Aug. 4.

District 13 went 13-1 to reach the World Series.

The experience has had a familiar tenor for first-year manager Tom Ginther.

Ginther led the Conejo Valley Little League team to the 2004 World Series finale at Williamsport, Pa.

Timmy Ginther (Tom’s son), James Brady and Hayden Cronenbold and are the only players on this roster who played in 2004.

“I’d like to call it interesting,” said Tom Ginther, who has coached at Oaks Christian for seven years. “It’s a different animal. This is definitely much more competitive. You’re playing on a real baseball field.

“The respect of the game and showing class is what I look for out of these guys, on and off the field.”

Brady, one of six returning players from the 2009 team, patrols third base after manning shortstop during last year’s run.

The Thousand Oaks graduate said this tournament has been a smoother journey.

“Being back in South Carolina, it’s a lot easier the second time around,” the leadoff hitter said. “You know the atmosphere during the games. You’re not really surprised by much. . . .

“Baseball pretty much takes up my whole summer. I really look forward to traveling and playing. In California, the competition is there so we don’t need to travel a lot. This tournament gives us the ability to go to different places.”

Brady will major in chemical biology at UC Berkeley and, if he can balance his schoolwork, may consider playing baseball for the Golden Bears. Brady entered the World Series batting .386 with 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

Timmy Ginther, a senior-to-be at TOHS, has been raking the ball for District 13. The center fielder and pitcher led the team with three home runs and 28 hits, and he’s added 21 RBI.

“We’re just looking for a little bit of revenge to win the last game,” the Lancer said.

Abbott has been sensational on the mound.

The former Highlander entered the week with a 3-0 record, 1.03 ERA and 25 strikeouts.

Lancer Peter McAfee leads District 13 with a .578 batting average, 27 RBI and eight doubles.

Brandon Blair, who graduated from TOHS this spring, is 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA.

Michael Coates, who finished third overall in the aforementioned home run contest, is 3-0 with 14 strikeouts on the bump.

District 13 is batting .406 as a collective unit.

Bobby Cortes, Josh Davis, Daniel Delaney, Kody Kasper, Travis Lange, Mark Manos, Vito Messina, Trevor O’Shea, Kyle Sanders and Lucas Steagall also contribute for the ballclub.

“We’re coming into our own,” Ginther said. “We’ve come to the point where all these teams are about equal on the American side, so it’s going to come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes and who’s mentally prepared for each game.”
