Newbury Park woman, 44, sent to prison for embezzling

Elizabeth Ann Jones, 44, of Newbury Park, was recently sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison after her convictions in April on 10 felony charges, including grand theft, forgery, computer fraud and tax evasion.

Jones worked for 18 years as a bookkeeper for the Conejo Valley Women’s Group, a Thousand Oaks medical practice. In December 2008, the company terminated Jones after the discovery of suspicious purchases made with company funds.

An audit of company checks dating back to 2002 revealed that for six years Jones forged hundreds of company checks to and for the benefit of herself and her family. She hid the theft by falsifying data in an electronic ledger she maintained for the company. She didn’t declare or pay income tax on her illegal income.

Jones was ordered to pay restitution of $957,000 to her former employer and $201,400 to the Franchise Tax Board.
