staff writer Joann Groff has been named editor of the Moorpark Acorn.
Groff, 27, replaces Kyle Jorrey, who has headed up the Moorpark paper for the past year. Jorrey continues as the Simi Valley Acorn editor.
Groff is a 2005 graduate of Pepperdine University where she spent four years at the university’s student newspaper, The Graphic, serving as both news editor and editor in chief. She was named Pepperdine’s Journalism Graduate of the Year in 2005.
Groff joined the Acorn newspapers as a staff writer in August 2006 after working for a year at a daily newspaper in Central California. During her tenure with the Acorn she’s covered city and school news in several communities of the Conejo and Las Virgenes valleys.
“Over the past few years, I have developed a deep respect for the role of the community newspaper,” Groff said.
“The importance of providing Moorpark residents with indepth and quality coverage of their community is paramount.
“I look forward to continuing the Acorn’s legacy of awardwinning writing and intensive local reporting.”
Groff, who will continue writing in addition to her duties as editor, is looking forward to preserving the quality of the Moorpark Acorn while also looking to expand its online presence.
“The No. 1 priority of the Acorn newspapers will always be the printed product that continues to garner more and more reader support,” Groff said.
“I also hope that as more readers continue to use the Internet to find their news, the Moorpark Acorn’s online site, www.mpacorn.com, will be a strong source for both breaking news and archived stories.”
She has launched a Moorpark Acorn Facebook page and plans to incorporate more technological opportunities to share content from the Moorpark Acorn online.
Groff can be reached Monday through Friday by calling (805) 367-8232, ext. 33. E-mails should be sent to moorpark@theacorn.com.
The Acorn, Simi Valley Acorn, Thousand Oaks Acorn, Moorpark Acorn and Camarillo Acorn are distributed weekly to a combined 144,000 homes and businesses.
