Geoff Dougherty of Newbury Park, a physics professor at California State University Channel Islands, and his family spent six months in Brisbane, Australia from July 2009 to January 2010 as part of Dougherty’s Fulbright Senior Scholarship program. He received the scholarship to undertake research in medical imaging.

Dougherty was based at the Queensland University of Technology, where he researched the early effects of osteoarthritis, a chronic disease affecting the cartilage that surrounds certain bones, but also was involved with research on osteoporosis, which results in fragile bones that break easily, and scoliosis, the curvature of the spine.

The professor was invited to give a keynote speech on medical imaging at the Image and Vision Computing conference in Wellington, New Zealand, in November while he was abroad.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, gives grants to students and teachers that allow them to study and teach in foreign countries.
