James Roscoe, engineer at Fire Station No. 34, was taken to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center after injuring his ankle as he fought a fire in the 200 block of Larkhill Street in Thousand Oaks.

Emergency calls went out at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday reporting a vehicle on fire inside a garage.

The first alarm response— three engines, a ladder truck and a battalion chief—arrived at 8:30 a.m. and found a single-story home’s garage, attic and part of the inside structure burning, said Ventura County Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Ron Oatman.

A second alarm brought reinforcements of another three engines, a ladder truck, a battalion chief and a variety of support equipment. By 8:56 a.m. the fire had been put out, Oatman said.

A man in his 50s and two dogs escaped the blaze. Neighbors came forward and took care of the dogs for the man, the fire captain said.

“There’s bad damage in the garage and inside the home,” Oatman said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
