Host families needed for foreign students

Cultural Homestay International, a 30-year-old nonprofit educational exchange program, is seeking volunteer host families for a group of high school students from Italy, Belgium and France who will be visiting the Conejo Valley from June 28 through July 27.

Host families provide a home environment in which students can practice their English, eat meals and have a place to sleep, which could be sharing a room with a sibling.

CHI was founded in 1980 to promote international understanding, friendship and goodwill through cultural homestays.

On weekdays, the exchange students are taught and supervised by CHI teacher coordinators who conduct classes four mornings a week at a local study center and introduce students to American music, sports, beaches and sites in the afternoon. Once a week, the group takes on an all-day outing to such places as Disneyland.

During evenings and weekends, host families include their exchange student in their family traditions and activities. Host families are welcome to participate in most afternoon activities and all-day trips.

Students carry insurance and spending money.

Host families can include single parents, empty nesters, households with young children, and two-parent homes.

When necessary, CHI can arrange for a student to visit two different homes to accommodate a family’s travel plans. Some host families invite the exchange student on the family vacation.

CHI also conducts 10-month academic exchange programs. For more information, call Nancy Paul, teacher coordinator, at (805) 402-4182.
