Immigration reform on agenda at Universal Fellowship
Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will present a community forum, “Why America Needs Immigration Reform,” at 7:30 p.m. Fri., April 30 at 3327 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park.
Dr. José Alamillo, an associate professor at California State University Channel Islands, will explain the evolution of the U.S. immigration system and identify the kind of changes needed to improve American security. He will discuss why Congress must pass effective and responsible reforms that address both human rights and the economic crisis.
Alamillo was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and raised in Ventura County. He earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology and communication at UC Santa Barbara and a master’s degree and a doctorate in comparative cultures at UC Irvine. He is the author of “Making Lemonade out of Lemons: Mexican American Labor and Leisure in a California Town.”
He joined CSUCI in 2008 as coordinator of the Chicano/a Studies Program.
The program is free but donations will be accepted.
