Second Chance Prom at church will raise funds for Catholic Heart camp

The Second Chance Prom at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Thousand Oaks this Saturday will give guests a chance to relive prom night while a youth group raises funds for a cause.

Lee Renaud, a volunteer service coordinator for teens at St. Max, said the teen group will use the money raised from the prom to pay for a trip the youths will take to revitalize an impoverished neighborhood this summer.

The church has teamed with Catholic Heart Workcamp, a nonprofit group that revitalizes communities and works to beautify homes for the elderly, disabled and others who cannot afford repairs. Teen groups work with the camp every summer throughout the United States.

The St. Max group has chosen to stay in California and work in Inglewood. Renaud said the group hopes to raise $6,000.

She said that in addition to having students refurbish homes, which includes painting, cleanup and yardwork, they may also help at a day care center or food bank in Inglewood.

Dustin Kowell, 16, is a student at Thousand Oaks High School and a member of the church group. When Dustin saw a video about the work Catholic Heart Workcamp does each year, he knew he wanted to participate.

“I saw the video and thought it would be a great way to spend a week of my summer,” Dustin said. “I can meet people my age from all over the country and also help out poor people in need of our help. I think it will be a great experience.”

As for the prom, Renaud said the students are working feverishly to put on a genuine prom night for guests and will even crown a king and queen. The theme of the prom is “Sail Away.”

Renaud said regardless of how much money the students raise, the experience of organizing a dinner dance and planning for a week of work in the summer has “already been a success.” She said the students have shown exuberance for the cause and have worked as a unified team, which will help them in the work they’ll do this summer.

Tickets to the prom are $25 per person, which includes dinner, dancing and “a night to remember,” Renaud said.

The prom will be from 7 to 10 p.m. this Saturday, April 17, in the O’Reilly Hall at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 5801 Kanan Road, in Thousand Oaks, adjacent to Oak Park. For tickets, call (818) 991-3915.
