Chabad’s Friendship Circle walk-athon will support special needs youths

Though he can’t participate in many activities, he has a passion for music and has always dreamed of being a DJ. This weekend will be his first gig.
Roy Ashkenazi, a 16-yearold teenager with cerebral palsy, will play his first DJ gig during the annual Friendship Walk, which starts at noon Sun., March 21 at the Friendship Circle Center, Agoura Hills Chabad, 30345 Canwood St.
Registration opens at 11 a.m. at Willow Elementary School, 29026 Laro Drive, Agoura Hills.
The event begins with an opening ceremony and pep rally at the Chabad, followed by a 5K walk. The walk will end with a festival at Willow school.
The festival will have a carnival, African acrobatic show, family activities, refreshments and music led by Roy.
“Although Roy is unable to participate in typical teen activities such as playing basketball and riding a bike, he has always had a passion for music,” said Denny Ashkenazi, Roy’s mother. “It has been his lifelong dream to be a DJ, and we can’t wait for him to play his first gig at the Friendship Walk.”
Last year’s Friendship Walk drew more than 1,200 participants and raised more than $185,000. This year’s goal is $250,000, which will be used to expand the services and activities that the Friendship Circle offers to more than 200 families.
The Conejo Valley Friendship Circle is a nonprofit Jewish mentoring program that serves families in the West San Fernando Valley and Conejo Valley by partnering 300 volunteer teens as “buddies” with special needs youths.
Registration for the walk is free, and every registered walker will receive a free Friendship Walk T-shirt.
