Writer is seeing the wrong ‘No right turn on red’
Please print this letter in response to Janet Goldberg’s letter in the Feb. 25 Thousand Oaks Acorn (“Drivers should respect ‘No right turn on red’ signs”).
I live right next to this intersection so I’m very familiar with the sign in question. The “No right turn on red” isn’t for traffic exiting from the northbound 101 onto Moorpark Road.
The sign that Goldberg wrote is “very hard to see, way across the street” is actually for the motorists turning right onto the northbound 101 entrance across the street.
They must not turn right on red since the opposing traffic gets a green arrow to turn left onto that onramp and it’s not safe for them to also try to squeeze onto that one-lane onramp.
So, go ahead and turn right after stopping on a red if the traffic is clear coming down Moorpark Road.
As far as her suggestion about a police officer “hanging out on Moorpark Road,” let me assure that they do “hang out” to catch all of the drivers on the southbound exit at Moorpark Road turning right on a red there!
At that offramp there’s no turning right on a red onto Moorpark Road, but lots of drivers ignore it.
Hope this helps with Goldberg’s confusion––and the honking can stop.
