Speaker to discuss the discoveries from telescopes

Astronomy event a week from tonight

The Discovery Center for Science and Technology presents “Astronomical Discoveries from the World’s Largest Telescopes” with Ian McLean, UCLA professor, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thurs., March 11 at Baxter Biosciences, 1 Baxter Way, Westlake Village.

This event is part of the Science Speaker Series and is supported by Baxter Biosciences, Time Warner Cable, California Lutheran University and EARTHS Magnet School.

McLean describe some of the discoveries made with the W.M. Keck 10-meter telescopes on the 14,000-foot summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii over the last decade. These telescopes are immune to the distortions that limit other Earth-based telescopes because they’re each made of 36 smaller mirrors that are electronically re-aimed frequently to compensate for atmospheric twinkling and equipped with sensors that can see through dust and gas clouds.

McLean will present planets orbiting other stars and a massive black hole at the center of the galaxy as seen from the Keck telescopes.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, teachers and students. Tickets will be available at the door. The lectures are geared for adults and mature teens.
