Medical marijuana operation in Santa Barbara ends in arrest of T.O. man, 41
A three-month narcotics investigation by five law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of a Thousand Oaks man on Feb. 17.
David Macfarlane, 41, was arrested on allegations of three felonies: possession of marijuana, sale of marijuana and money laundering, said Thousand Oaks Police Sgt. Robert Thomas.
Macfarlane allegedly owned an illegal marijuana dispensary in Santa Barbara called the Santa Barbara Care Center, and his sole livelihood came from the sale of marijuana, Thomas said.
“ Prop. 215 is very complicated, but it’s clear that you can’t be in business selling marijuana for profit,” Thomas said.
Law enforcement agencies responsible for the arrest are Ventura County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit, Ventura County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, Simi Valley Police Department Narcotic Unit, Santa Barbara Police Department Narcotics Unit and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Unit.
On Feb. 17, a search warrant was served at the suspect’s home in the 2600 block of Lakewood Place in Thousand Oaks, which resulted in the reported seizure of about $30,000 and four firearms, a police report said.
Macfarlane is suspected of laundering hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits he earned from the dispensary, Thomas said.
A simultaneous search warrant was served at the Care Center. Inside the business, investigators say they seized 84 marijuana plants, 8 pounds of marijuana, a loaded semiautomatic handgun and a Taser stun gun.
Macfarlane was booked into the East County Jail with bail set at $250,000.
Search warrants were also served at four homes and three other marijuana dispensaries in Santa Barbara County. Seven suspects in all were arrested in Santa Barbara County as a result of the investigation. In addition, more than 130 marijuana plants and 23 pounds of processed marijuana were seized, a police report said.
