Human services won’t comment on girl’s adventure

As some applaud Abby Sunderland’s courage and fortitude to attempt to circle the globe solo at age 16, some have criticized her parents for allowing it because of the risks.

Abby said her parents are “very protective” of her. They’re loving and supportive of her dreams, she said.

“It’s a complicated business to start interfering in a family’s life,” Ventura County Human Services Deputy Director Judy Webber said.

She wouldn’t comment on whether the agency was concerned about a child trying to sail the world, as Abby is doing.

“We diligently investigate all reports of child abuse and neglect. We don’t talk about specific referrals,” Webber said.

Her agency investigates when parents leave a child alone, but she wouldn’t say whether the agency investigates when a child leaves her parents for six months.

“In general, we respond when there’s credible evidence of imminent risk to a child,” Webber said.

“It depends totally on the situation,” she said. “There are always variables.”

Webber suggests those who are concerned about any child’s safety to call the Ventura County Elder/Child Abuse Hotline at (805) 654-3200.
