Explore memory loss at Senior Congress

The Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation (CLVFF) will once again explore memory loss and memory improvement at its sixth annual Senior Congress.

The sequel to last year’s workshop on memory loss will be from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wed., Feb. 3 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church’s O’Reilly Hall, 5801 Kanan Road, Westlake Village.

“Thanks for the Memory, Part 2: Recognizing, Diagnosing and Managing its Loss” will help participants understand how aging relates to memory and what techniques can be used to improve it, said Karen Malatesta, executive director of the foundation.

Several presentations are being planned.

One will help people distinguish the difference between real memory loss versus normal, agerelated memory degradation. Another will cover diseases that affect memory.

Other topics will include how to care for and treat memory-impaired people.

The speakers include a neuropsychologist, an Alzheimer’s disease specialist and people who care for memory-impaired individuals.

The congress is being organized by Carolyn Kopp, the foundation’s trustee emeritus and former president and executive officer.

Kopp has a Master of Science in gerontology and is a consultant for a resource center that provides free support services for caregivers of cognitively impaired people.

More than 35 sponsors will host booths where information and mementos will be distributed.

Also, a light lunch will be served.

The Senior Congress is one of a series of forums that the foundation regularly presents to benefit various segments of the community.

Admission to the congress is free; however, seating is limited, so advance reservations are required.

Call CLVFF at (818) 8801054 or e-mail clvff@juno.com. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

The congress is sponsored by several organizations and businesses that serve the senior community.

Premier sponsors are the Rotary clubs of Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village, and Sunrise Senior Living, Malatesta said.

Other sponsors are Access TLC Caregivers, Agoura Hills Senior Retreat, Atria Hillcrest and Atria Las Posas, Buena Vista Hospice, Grand Oaks Senior Living, Home Helpers, OakView at University Village, Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary and Wells Fargo Bank.
