Oaks Christian eighth-grader named to All-American roster

Oaks Christian Middle School student Zack Bornstein has been selected to play in the FBU Youth All-American Bowl Game for the nation’s top eighth-grade football players.

The game is held in conjunction with the U.S. Army AllAmerican Bowl for the nation’s top high school seniors and will be played Sunday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

A nationwide scouting review of more 3,000 youth football associations and 6,000 athletes yielded 1,430 player nominations.

After a four-month selection process, which included assessment of live play, game-time film review and FBU camp evaluations, the rosters were selected.

The selected participants represent the United States, Canada, Pacific Islands and Mexico. The FBU Youth All-American Bowl selection committee includes regional directors and scouts throughout the U.S.

Bornstein competed for the Oaks Christian Middle School football team this fall and helped the Lions to a Delphic League championship.

In the final game against Chaminade, he scored on a 77-yard touchdown reception with a minute left in regulation as Oaks Christian won, 20-14.

Bornstein also competes in track and field for both the United Track Club and the Westlake Track Club. Last year he was the AAU indoor national champion in the pentathlon and the USATF youth outdoor national champion in the same event.

The pentathlon consists of five events, including the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and 1,500-meter run.
