High school sports spotlight: Basketball

The Lancers have been winning with ease—which shouldn’t be a shock to anyone.

Thousand Oaks High’s boys’ basketball team has outscored its opponents by almost 20 points per game while racking up a 10-2 overall record heading into the new year.

Paced by standouts Alex Tiffin, James Whalen and Evann Hall, the defending section champion Lancers are enjoying a solid start despite a one-point loss to Salesian on Monday.

Thousand Oaks has also won its first two Marmonte League games, bouncing Agoura and Westlake. TOHS plays Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at league rival Simi Valley.

The Lancer girls are 6-6, but three losses were by a combined seven points. They’ve only been blown out once, to undefeated Agoura 68-54 in the league opener.

Katie Deamer is the only varsity player scoring in double figures. Deamer, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, averages 13.8 points per game. She also snags 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 steals per contest.

Deamer’s best game came against the best, as she collected 25 points and 11 rebounds against the Chargers.

Camilla Chun, Katherine Reaves, Kendall Frisoli and Tayler Valdez have also made solid contributions for TOHS.

The Newbury Park girls (6-6 overall, 1-1 in the Marmonte) are adjusting without four starters from last year’s league championship squad.

Hanna Burge and Jasmine Polk have been offensive and defensive standouts, while Kamyrn Koga is doing a solid job in the backcourt.

Newbury Park resumes league action on Wednesday at home against Westlake.

Westlake’s girls (5-6, 1-1) picked up a league win against Royal on Dec. 14.

The Warriors have also defeated Rio Mesa, Pacifica, Strong preseason f Mayfair and Cleveland.

Westlake’s boys have enjoyed a little more success.

The Warriors (8-6, 1-1) have plenty of offensive balance. Devon Silber, Mark Friedman, Joseph Detweiler and Kirk Jones all average more than 11 points per game.

WHS took Thousand Oaks to the limit, falling 53-51 on Dec. 16.

The Warriors play Newbury Park at home next Wednesday.

Oaks Christian’s girls (10-1 at press time) are off to a hot start.

Three Lions average double figures, led by Katie Brooks at 15.6 points per game. Brooks shoots 60 percent from the field and 84 percent from the charity stripe, while grabbing 10.6 rebounds per game.

Brianna Barrett (11.4 points), Crystal Owusu (10.2 points) and Meg McIntyre (9.8 points) also pick up a large scoring load.

Oaks Christian opens league action next Tuesday against Villanova at home.

The Lion boys (7-3) are also winning in the early going.

After losing two of its first three games—including a blowout defeat against Thousand Oaks—the Lions reeled off six straight wins until falling to Loyola on Monday.

Chass Bryan leads Oaks Christian with 17.9 points per game. Dillon Van Der Wall, Taylor Hange, Spencer Kier and Blair Holliday each average around nine points per contest.

OCHS plays at Golden Valley next Tuesday.

La Reina (7-5) has enjoyed a solid start, aided in large part by Mary Kate Jankowski (18.5 points and 13.7 rebounds per game) and Julia Violano (10.1 points, 8.2 rebounds).

The two Regents have combined to reject 75 shots, while Jankowski has averaged two steals per game.

La Reina plays its first home game Tuesday against Tri-Valley League rival Nordhoff.
