T.O. Acorn is on top as city news source

In the Community Attitude Survey, the most popular source for Thousand Oaks news, information and programming was the Thousand Oaks Acorn .

“I think the Thousand Oaks Acorn does a damn good job, but I never would’ve guessed the Acorn would have been far and away the leading source of information,” said Mayor Tom Glancy.

Forty-one percent of residents chose the Acorn , with the Ventura County Star newspaper following with 29 percent, just 3 percent more than the Internet in general, at 26 percent. The city’s website came in at 22 percent. The city’s newsletter was cited by 14 percent.

Respondents could name three sources, which explains how the percentages exceed 100 percent.

“I wouldn’t have thought it was going to be the Star, either. I thought a lot more people got their information off the website,” Glancy said.

The question about the most popular sources for news and information in Thousand Oaks was asked so the city could identify the most effective means of communicating with residents, the survey report said.

“The city places a high priority on effective communication with residents, so understanding how residents access information assists us in the effective dissemination of information,” said city public information officer Andrew Powers.

“The Acorn is one of those primary sources, and we will continue to work closely with them to communicate with residents,” Powers said.

The Thousand Oaks Acorn is happy to have finished first in the survey, said editor Steve Holt.

“But it also serves as a reminder that we need to raise the bar even higher,” he said.
