Her husband, a fireman, deserves his pension plan

I’m the wife of a firefighter. It hurts when people don’t understand or realize the sacrifice he makes, both on and off the job.

My husband became a firefighter because he enjoys helping others and serving the public. His day often starts like others. His alarm goes off and he’s out the door by 6 a.m.

At work, they review their responsibilities for the day and get

o work. Many jobs need to be completed throughout the day, not

ust 911 calls from people in all kinds of situations. Some are hav

ng heart attacks, others have been

n car accidents, a house is ablaze or a child is having a seizure, are

ust a few. Regardless, the primary goal is to assist people, preserve

ife, protect property and help anyone in need.

When he fights fires, he risks his life. A constant worry is what he’s been exposed to, from the smoke during a car or structure fire.

Many firefighters are hurt in

he line of duty while rescuing others and preserving property. Back, neck and knee injuries are common. Sadly, some never re

urn to work.

Other firefighters get cancer from toxic substances they were exposed to.

Despite it all, these same firefighters will tell you they en

oyed their careers of helping people.

We have two children who don’t get to see their daddy often because of his long shifts.

While many dads read books

o their children at bedtime, my kids ask “Where is daddy and why can’t he read us a book?” “Why isn’t daddy having dinner with us?” “Why is daddy work

ng on Christmas?” “Why is daddy working on Father’s Day?”

While most people enjoy holidays and weekends with families, my husband is at work, ready to assist, ready to serve and with a positive attitude, 24/7.

My husband and all firefighters and their families deserve credit. They deserve respect. They deserve love.

They deserve their pensions.

Many adults and also children, stop them on the streets during their day to express their gratitude. If you haven’t, won’t you commit to doing the same? Jamie Hammer Newbury Park
