Teams creep closer to the top in latest CIF coaches' rankings
Area high school sports teams are discovering that being second best isn't so bad at this time of year. With the postseason looming next month, the Oaks Christian softball squad, Westlake boys' volleyball team and Thousand Oaks boys' tennis squad were all ranked No. 2 in their respective divisions in the latest CIFSouthern Section coaches' polls released Monday.
Boys' volleyball, in particular, is feeling the love locally.
In addition to Westlake, the Division II poll featured Royal at No. 3 and Thousand Oaks at No. 5. A fourth Marmonte League team, Agoura, was sitting just outside the top 10.
Over in Division III, Oak Park's netters were ranked third and Oaks Christian was fourth.
The two rivals played Tuesday at OCHS, with the Eagles prevailing in five games.
Viewpoint's boys' volleyball team is ranked sixth in Division IV. The Patriots also garnered a No. 8 ranking in Division IV boys' tennis.
The Thousand Oaks softball squad was seventh in Division I.
TOHS is 7-0 in Marmonte League play after defeating Newbury Park on Tuesday. Royal and Simi Valley were both just outside the top 10.
Royal was the only area baseball team that was ranked. The Highlanders are sixth in Division I. Grace Brethren just missed being ranked in Division VI.
