School principal staunchly defended

2007-11-08 / Letters

This is in response to the Nov. 1 letter "Events shouldn't set bad examples" from Jan Moon. As University Elementary parents, we feel the need to respond.

Not only are we University parents, but we recently moved our two children back to Conejo Valley Unified School District from Oak Park Unified School District.

We came back for several reasons, the main one being Principal Jeff Rickert.

We have no concerns that Mr. Rickert's enthusiasm for the programs and kids at University are inappropriate. Both our daughters had the opportunity to lend a helping hand at duct taping him to the pole. It was all they could talk about--and no, our family dog wasn't found taped to the light post after the school's event.

My children understand that this was an event at school. Their classes worked hard at winning this reward.

And a great reward--it was fun!

Jeff Rickert is superb at his job. He knows that delicate balance between parents, teachers and children. He's visible and involved in every aspect of this school. My kids think he is fantastic, and he is. His creativity and willingness to be part of the University school spirit is an example for which all schools should strive.

What kind of message is being taught here at University Elementary? The message is clear each and every day as we watch Jeff Rickert walk around the school and engage with the children in all of their activities.

University Elementary is an amazing community that sets wonderful examples. Working hard and achieving goals is an important lesson for all children.

Being unique with rewards makes Jeff Rickert an innovator in education, and we fully support his methods and the message that our kids walk away with daily. Amy and Ron Ballen Thousand Oaks
