Peace officers run for charity in NYC Marathon
Deputies from Ventura County Sheriff 's Department ran through the streets of the Big Apple last Sunday in the 38th annual New York City Marathon to raise money for a local charity.
Capt. Randy Pentis challenged the staff at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center to raise $5,000 on behalf of the Doctor Darrell Davey MD Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund.
The fund was set up to promote the profession of nursing and was established in the name of Davey, an emergency room physician at Los Robles for more than 30 years until he died in an airplane crash in 2005.
Pentis, Capt. Tim Hagel, Sgt. Frank Underlin, Sgt. Paul Higgason and Sgt. Dave Kenney formed Cops Running for Charity, which raises money for medical charities and emphasizes the importance of physical fitness.
The team has participated in events throughout the world and has raised thousands of dollars for charities such as Children's Hospital, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, MakeAWish Foundation and the American Heart Association.
